"More than 100 men" from Severomorsk killed in Ukraine
The city that hosts Russia’s Northern Fleet confirms that at least 100 local men have been killed in the war of aggression against Ukraine.
According to Severomorsk Mayor Vladimir Yevmenkov, the loss of more than 100 local residents is the price for "peace and tranquillity in our homes."
A so-called Book of Remembrance for servicemen killed during the invasion of Ukraine has been placed in St Andrew’s Naval Cathedral in Severomorsk. More than 100 names of city residents have already been entered in the book.
Mayor Yevmenkov was the initiator of the Book of Remembrance. According to Yevmenkov, the initiative was discussed at meetings with relatives of those killed, as well as representatives of the so-called Defenders of the Fatherland Foundation and a Centre for Supporting Families of Mobilised Servicemen and Participants in the "special military operation."
Yevmenkov thanked the Severomorsk Diocese for helping to implement the initiative. He also noted that a monument honouring participants in the war had previously been erected in a local city square.
"The monument in the square at Safonova Street 2 was erected in honour of all those fighting on this battlefield. The Book of Remembrance is for those who fought their final battle," the mayor explained.
Yevmenkov also wrote that "the pages bearing the names of fallen fellow residents are evidence of the price paid for peace and tranquillity in our homes."
The statement sounds contradictory, considering the fact that Russia is the aggressor state and Ukraine the victim. In response to the Russian attacks, Ukrainian drones strike targets across Russia. On the night of 7 October alone, according to official figures from Russia’s Defence Ministry, air defence forces on duty "intercepted and destroyed" 311 Ukrainian UAVs over the Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Tula, Oryol, Lipetsk, Voronezh, Smolensk, Tambov, Kaluga, Saratov, Samara, Penza, Rostov, and Volgograd regions, Perm Krai, and the Republic of Crimea, as well as over the Black and Azov Seas.
St Andrew’s Cathedral is the main church of Russia’s Northern Fleet. According to Yevmenkov, anyone who wishes may come and pray for the servicemen who have died.
Severomorsk is located about 25 km north-east of Murmansk and is the main base of the Russian Northern Fleet. In 2025, the city had a population of about 44,500.
According to data from the Mediazona and BBC Russian Service project Russia-200, which keeps a named record of Russian military deaths, the deaths of almost 259,000 Russian servicemen have been confirmed since the beginning of the full-scale war against Ukraine. According to the project, 107 of those killed were residents of Severomorsk.
These figures include only known and confirmed cases. The actual number of deaths may be higher.
