Norway successfully tests new naval missile
A test launch of a RIM-162 ESSM missile has been carried out by a frigate in the Norwegian Sea.
The test launch of an Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) Block 2 was successfully carried out near Andøya, about 300 km north of the Arctic Circle.
The US-made missile was launched from the Norwegian frigate KNM Otto Sverdrup, the Norwegian Navy reports on social media.
Data collected from both the missile and the combat system has been sent to the USA for further detailed analysis, the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency’s Maritime Capabilities division (FMA Markap) reports.
"This has been an excellent example of international cooperation and a professional performance by both the crew of KNM Otto Sverdrup and the test management team at Range Control," says Project Manager Commander Tor Harald Monsen.
The firing campaign included both simulated firing and live-fire exercises against drones. The primary aim was to test new software in the Aegis combat system and to ensure that the new functionality and communication with the missile operate in accordance with requirements, the Defence Materiel Agency informs.
The firing demonstrated that the ESSM Block 2 missile delivers the expected improved performance. The results show that the Norwegian Navy is now set to achieve a significant capability enhancement for ship-based air defence, the Agency confirms.
The firing campaign was carried out with a large test and support team from the US Navy, Andøya Space Defence (ASD), Lockheed Martin, the National Maritime Operations Centre (NSS N6), and the Norwegian Navy’s Supply Command (SFK).
The RIM-162 Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) is a development of the RIM-7 Sea Sparrow missile used to protect ships from attacking missiles and aircraft. It is manufactured by the US defence company Raytheon.
